AOW Week 2/26/15

The Garden- ISIS destroy ancient artefacts at Mosul museum

This article has many main points that are very important to know about. The first main point is the history these artifacts had how important they are to some people. Some of the artifacts dated back to the Assyrian and Akkadian empires. These artifacts that were destroyed by ISIS had great importance to the people of Islam and other people. Another main point is that these events could lead to fighting riots and in worse case war in the Middle East. People are getting frustrated with ISIS because they are destroying priceless artifacts that help us understand what civilization was like back then for no good reason.

The authors purpose of writing this article was to inform people on how tragic this event really is. In the article the author interviews Kino Gabriel. He is one of the leaders of the Syriac Military Council. What Kino says about the subject is “murder of people and destruction is not enough, so even our civilization and the culture of our people is being destroyed”. This is a stocking quote because he is comparing human lives to thousands of years old artifacts. This is showing how important these statues and artifacts are to these people another civilization. This quote supports my claim because this statement really emphasizes the importance of these statues and how historically important they are.I also feel like he was trying to persuade the reader that what ISIS did was very wrong and we need to stop ISIS before things get worse. I know this because he uses words like destroyed, speechless, outrage to kinda convince you to go on there side and support them. The author even includes a video of the terrorist destroying the statues. He did this to prove that ISIS did actually do it and also because videos give a more emotional effect on a reader then just words. So he probably added the video to try and emotionally convince the reader to support them.

This article is full of great quotes but this is the one that I feel like the whole worlds should hear. Like my last quote it is comparing these artifacts to human lives. This quote is being stated by Mardean Isaac, an Assyrian writer “When you watch the footage, you feel visceral pain and outrage, like you do when you see human beings hurt,”. This quote had a strong impact on me because I can relate to part of it. The part that I can relate to is when I see people being hurt or abused I do feel for them. I also even sometimes feel hatred towards the person causing the pain. I never thought broken pieces of rock and statues can make you feel the same as a person being abused until I read this quote. So if people read this quote then they might see how much pain broken pieces of rocks can cause a person. If they feel the same way I did after reading this quote then they might research history a little more. Eventually might even start trying to protect these priceless artifacts from people like Isis followers. That is the main goal I think the quote was trying to accomplish in the first place.

AOW Impressions for 2-20

I found that a lot of the articles were either about Isis or other countries starting to threaten other countries. Before this gallery walk I did not that Isis had about 90 other countries that are teaming up with Isis and I did not realize how much of a threat they are to surrounding countries like Italy. Even though a lot of the blogs were focused on Isis not all of the Articles are focused on the same topic on Isis. Like Diego's blog his blog focused on Isis but instead of focusing on the beheading part of Isis I focused on the social media Isis uses to get there ideas out there in public. Besides Isis and their violence some people had articles about Russia and how they are now posing a threat to Europe. Stevens article talks about Russia and how they are building up there military and are showing signs of violence towards Europe. Even though a lot of the articles were about Isis I still enjoyed the gallery walk because I got lots of information about Isis in multiple point of views.

Besides a lot of the articles being about Isis there were a lot of unique articles that only one person had the same topic. This gallery walk really showed me that I need to be more into world events and problems. It varied from Marisa's article about woman's rights to Sarai's article about the CIA. Some of my favorite articles were Athziry's blog because instead of it being about war and other problems in the world is showed the personal side of things that really can relate to anyone. I also liked Steven's blog because it had lots of facts and it was different and I learned about something that I did not now anything about it until Steven explained to me about it. In all this weeks AOW's were very interesting and had some topics that were eye opening.

Maze Runner 2/19/15

Prompt: Describing what has happened so far in the book
Pages read: 0-45

I have heard a lot about this book a lot of my friends have read the book and watched the movie. I have been refusing to watch the movie before I have finished the book so I am very excited to finally start reading it.  I am hoping that this book will be as good as my friends have described it. I have found that a lot of the time the book is not as good as people say it is so I am very excited to read it for my self and find out if it is as good as I hope it is. So far this book has been very interesting it is very detailed and well written. Even though it's only the beginning of the book I can tell it is going to be one of the better books I have read.

The book starts of with a boy named Thomas waking up and finding himself in a pitch black box with noises that sound like pulleys and chains going on outside of it. After being trapped in the black box for hours finally the black box opened and light pored in and about 60 kids pulled out Thomas. After being pulled out of the crate Thomas realized that he didn't remember anything he didn't remember his age his parents, were he came from the only thing Thomas remembered was his name and how to talk. There were no adults around and there leader was a kid named Alby he was about 17 years old. He has a bigger body build and is hot headed but experienced at being a leader.

Thomas also meets a boy named Newt; Newt is the second in charge. He is a little smaller then Alby but still muscular he is easier to talk to then Alby and soon befriends Thomas. Newt helps Thomas get settled in and also gets up used to the ways of the Glade. The Glade is the small communities were all the kids live, eat, and sleep. Another thing that Thomas noticed after being in the Glade is that there are no girls that live on the community and only boys under the age of 20 live in the community. Thomas is finally starting to get settled in and getting used to the ways of the Glade both good and bad.

TKAM Book Talk

Transcript:
I chose To Kill A Mocking Bird the author of this book is Harper Lee. The genre of this book is realistic fiction or fiction.

Were this book takes place is in a small town called Maycomb Country located in Alabama, during the 1930's so when discrimination was still around. The main event that was happening during the book was the great depression it was the time when America was loosing lots of money and most people were poor and struggling to make a living. Scout is the main character in the book and she is the age of 6 when the book first starts but at the end of the book she is 9.  She is more of a tomboy and likes to solve problems with her firsts instead of her head, but also has a funny side to her and also has a great personality. Scout also has a brother that is 10 when the book first starts. Throughout the book Scout was struggling with being able to mature fast enough to be able to understand all the problems that are going on in the book. Jem and Scout were like best friends in the beginning of the book but by the end Jem kind of leaves her behind because he is mature and is starting to understand what is happening in the world while scout is still being a kid not really capable of understanding what is going on yet. The mood of this book is a combination of sadness and comedy. The book was during one of Americas most darkest times so of course there is going to be some sadness and guilt that are built into the book but it is not just all sadness it also had some funny and uplifting parts. Since there are children in the book of course there are going to be some sections were its just people having fun and also the kid’s of making a fool of them selves that sometimes get me to laugh. The main theme of this book is coming of age and growing up and how it showed the characters personalities change because of them growing up and learning more about the world.

This was my favorite book that we have read as a class all year. I like it because the characters had a lot of personality. I like how there personalities changed over the course of the book due to the main events that happened in the book. I also like how if you look at the story more in depth you will find that the book has a whole new meaning and everything ends up adding up. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about American discrimination in a more entertaining way. I also would suggest this book to teenagers because its shows coming of age really nicely and also helps you get some background knowledge on American history in a fun way.  People should get this book because it is one of those books were you cant stop reading it even if you are really tired. It is very creative and it is also not to hard to read sure there are some challenging part but its written well enough to have great detail but not be very confusing at the same time.

TKAM late 12/15

Pages read:Finished
Prompt: The personalties of the characters and how some change throughout the book

Scout is the first character that I want to talk about. She is a very curious girl like most other little kids. She wants to think that the world is perfect she tries to find the best in pretty much everything. I think she gets this attitude from her father like her father she looks at everyone equally it dose not  matter if they are white, black, old, young she will look at you the same. She also as lots of respect for her dad. I say this because in the beginning of the book she would get into fights and got into trouble but when Atticus started telling her to stop she was able to control herself and not fight at all. Throughout the book her personality changed also like in the beginning of the book she felt like it was her responsibility to defend her dad and brother but near the end of the book she started to realize that they could take care of them selves which shows a great change in maturity and personality.

Jem in the beginning of the book was like Scouts best friends but as the book continues on Jem starts growing up and mutchering at a much faster pace then Scout is able to and he starts leaving scout behind.  This is an example of Jem becoming a young man and leaving he childhood behind him. Jem also in the beginning of the book used to obey really everything Atticus told him to do but as the book continued he started to ask more questions and started disobeying Atticus because this is the stage were Jem is starting to think more like an adult and starts believing in what he wants to believe.  Like scout Jem goes through lots of mental changes throughout the book.

Atticus is a very brave man he speeches his mind even when he knows that it could end up bad for him. Atticus is also a very loving father and takes very good care of Scout and Jem. He teaches them discipline and also the most important morals that they will probably ever learn from there father. In the begining of the book Atticus was like an everyday person but as the book progressed he became more of a symbol or hope and bravery to not only to his kids but to other people in the community and also the reader.

Aow Impressions Week 26

This week we had a gallery walk were we all shared articles that we found on the internet that had to do with world events.  The gallery had such a large variety or problems in the world it varied from Abdiel and Isabelle's anti- immigration articles to Jesus's forbidden art article. I was very surprised when I realized how much I don't know about world events. I visited about 12 people and only 2 articles were about the same thing and that is very impressive because I originally thought that a lot of peoples articles would be about the same thing but it was the exact opposite.

These are my favorite articles that learned about. The first one was Jesus's forbidden art article I never knew that there was art that is forbidden. It was about the prisoners of the Holocaust drawing pictures of each other so incase they die people will know there identity. It was very emotional because people knew they were going to die and they just wanted people to know who they were when they do die. The second article that I enjoyed was Jenna's article about Jordan helping Japan with Isis. I know a lot about Isis but one thing that I did not know was that Japan needed help from Jordan to save at least one of the two hostages Isis is holding. Also enjoyed Sarai's article about the starting point of Isis and how they make 3 millions dollars a day. These are only some of the world events that I learned about but I did really enjoy the gallery walk.
